The Fifth Sun

Mayan mythology describes the creation and destruction of mankind by their gods four times in the Popol Vuh.  According to these writings, modern man belongs to the fifth and last creation or Fifth Sun.  Original creation occurred approximately 26,000 years ago, time period that is coincidental with one complete wobble of the Earth axis (precession of the equinoxes).  As to how the Mayans were able to decipher this time period without the aid of telescopes, calculators or computers remains a mystery.  The 5,125 year "sun" cycle is roughly equal to 1/5 of this 26,000 year period, henceforth the name Fifth Sun.  Researchers have correlated the starting date of the Fifth Sun to August 12, 3114 B.C. in our Gregorian calendar, a date known to the Mayans as the Birth of Venus.

The phrase Birth of Venus, amusingly identical to the title of the Renaissance masterpiece by artist Sandro Botticelli, actually relates to the planet Venus in this context.  The position of Venus on August 12, 3114 B.C. had a primary role in determining the beginning of the Fifth Sun era.  On December 21, 2012, planet Venus, along with a number of other planets of our Solar System will be prominent around the ecliptic.
